It started with a question:

How Effectively are We Serving Athletes?

MAR 2020

Special Olympics pauses in-person events due to Covid-19. It provides a unique opportunity to examine how effectively the organization is fulfilling its mission.

AUG 2021

A six month audit reaching more than 50,000 of the organization's constituents, including athletes, volunteers, and donors, reveals common painpoints for each.

SEPT 2021

The findings spur in-depth conversations between the organization’s leadership, partners, vendors, and constituents about the best path for resolving these challenges.

NOV 2021

The result: five areas for operational improvements based on these findings and the development of a five-year strategic plan to implement changes organization-wide.

SEPT 2022

The statewide "Beyond Gold" campaign kicks off with an omnichannel effort to communicate the strategic plan's core initiatives, objectives, and benchmarks.

2023 & on

Over the five year course of the campaign, the organization will work to implement these changes organization-wide, making continuous improvements based on constituent feedback and new opportunities.

Our Purpose

"Beyond Gold" is Special Olympics Washington's multi-year strategic plan that's designed to reach more people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities in more places, create more life-changing opportunities, and ignite support across the state. The plan is built on four initiatives that ultimately empower participants on and off the playing field by expanding the scope of our services beyond competition and sports.

Community Through Competition

These Community Through Competition Objectives will prioritize the needs of people with IDD and strengthen support from within their communities.

Key Initiative

Leadership and Learning

These Leadership and Learning Objectives will empower athletes to be advocates, ensuring that they are the ones leading the way.

Key Initiative

Belonging and Inclusion

These Belonging and Inclusion Objectives will drive inclusion for all people, especially in under-represented communities.

Key Initiative

Digital Equity

These Digital Equity Objectives will provide a better on/offline user experience for volunteers, athletes and people in their circles of care.
